Poetry by Gale Acuff

even though life for me there won't be I'll
think of rising out of the fire like that
phoenix but if I do and I'm not in
flames I'll try to stop at Earth and to Hell
with Heaven, I'll take eternal life back
where I lived it best, Earth I mean, not that
I lived forever there but when I was
happy, sometimes even sad, that's how it
seemed--I guess a good long life can go more
deeply than it ever does long so that's
Eternity to me and if I die
out of Earth again and spend my after
-life in Heaven then instead of soaring
maybe I can parachute down to where
I'm happiest. Sometimes we fall and rise.
